FGH working with the Tour of Britain 2015

fgh-security-tour-of-britainThe sun (eventually) shone on Clitheroe yesterday as thousands of cycling enthusiasts poured into the town to witness the start of the second leg of the Tour of Britain. This is the second time that the tour has come to Clitheroe and FGH Security had the privilege of providing stewards and door supervisors to assist in the marshalling and crowd control of the event. 100 of our finest and experienced frontline staff members were deployed in and around Clitheroe to liaise with spectators and ensure the safety of both onlookers and the athletes taking part in the race.

The Clitheroe to Colne leg of the event is one of toughest sections of the event with riders having to navigate the undulating terrain of the Ribble Valley and with the first ascent, the daunting Nick o’ Pendle, arising just 1.5km after the start line. Course director Andy Hawes described the event as a ‘strong man’s stage’ in which he didn’t anticipate a ‘sprint finish’ but rather ‘a breakaway with a handful of seconds lead’* due to the gradient leading up to the finish line in Colne. Hawes’ prediction was realised when the Czech Petr Vakoc of team Quick-Step crossed the finish line 7 seconds ahead of Spain’s Juan Jose Lobato.

This is not the first time FGH has deployed to the Tour of Britain. In 2011 and 2013 we also provided for sections of the race staged in the North West whilst in 2014 we also provided for the Tour de France when it was partly staged in Yorkshire. Peter Harrison, Managing Director of FGH Security puts down the success of such deployments to strategic planning and the allocation of the correct staff to align with the specific ethos of the event: ‘deployments like the Tour de Britain aren’t just thrown together at the last minute’ says Peter ‘rather they are the culmination of months of hard work, hours spent in meetings and many revised time plans. Logistically events such as the Tour of Britain are time costly; in the months leading up to such an event much effort is absorbed in identifying the correct staff members to staff the race. We looking in particular for sportsmen and women and sporting enthusiasts who can do justice to the event. I cannot thank enough the staff who pulled themselves out of bed on a dank Monday morning to kit up and do their best for FGH, the spectators and the event. The feedback we have had so far has been very pleasing’.
